WordPress 2.2 RC2 Up And Ready For Download

Today, Ryan Boren posted on his blog that WordPress 2.2 RC2 is up and available for download.

The WP developers are awesome. I posted about the WP 2.2 RC1 release just a few days ago and they released RC2. I’ve downloaded WP2.2 RC2 and will be upgrading my WordPress 2.2 RC1 test blog pretty soon. Visit this page to know the differences between RC1 and RC2.

And heres the lowdown on what went into in RC2.

* The WP importer was reworked to get around a preg_match_all() problem in PHP 5.2.2.
* The show count option for the archives widget now works for dropdowns.
* TinyMCE is now enabled for Safari Webkit 420 and above.
* A JS fix for Widgets admin.
* Fix blogroll importing from local file.
* Workaround a PHP 5.2.2 bug that was breaking XMLRPC.
* An i18n fix for the akismet widget.
* Akismet also got some attribute escaping fixes.
* Eliminated duplicate code in get_posts().
* Return the proper server protocol when HTTP/1.0 is requested. #3886
* Flush all output buffers during shutdown to avoid problems with PHP 5. Should fix plugins that use output buffers.

WordPress 2.2 RC1 Available For Download

According to Ryan Boren’s post, WordPress 2.2 RC1 has been made available for download. If you need support for the release candidate, the Testers List is the best place to go. But, it seems like they have dropped tagging feature:

We werent completely happy with the underlying design of the new tagging feature. Instead of shipping with something we werent entirely pleased with, we decided to remove tagging from 2.2. This is a big bummer since tagging was the biggest user-visible feature in 2.2. I think removing it was for the best, however, because the debate over the removal resulted in a new generic taxonomy design that is flexible and powerful and addresses all of the concerns with the old design. Plugins will be able to do some cool things with this new framework.

What’s so cool about WordPress 2.2 anyway?

>> New User Features

  • Improved comment editing
  • Widgets (no longer a plugin but available under Presentation tab)
  • Deactivate Plugins automatically (activate automatically not in yet)
  • New Blogger Import

>> Developer / Power User Stuff

  • Atom 1.0 support for feeds.
  • Multiple format comment feeds, including Atom.
  • Switched to jQuery for core JS, which is lighter and faster.
  • Atom API support.
  • Additional XML-RPC APIs for pages and such.
  • phpmailer (http://phpmailer.sourceforge.net/) was integrated for performance and maintainability.
  • Plugin sandbox http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3254
  • Ability to set database character set and collation via wp-config.php
  • Ability to set WordPress address (URL) and Blog address (URL) via wp-config.php

If these new features sound cool, you are always welcome to give WP 2.2 RC1 a try.

Happy Blogging!

Google Search Changes Clothes!

A few minutes ago, when I was searching something in Google, it was wearing the same old clothes (old UI) but when I searched again, it suddenly started to look nicer!

Screenshots to please your eyes:

Google's New UI (Top)

Google's New UI (Bottom)

Update: It seems like this layout is gone, as my readers are saying in their comments. But I’m still seeing the same new layout even after clearing my browser cache. I found a different layout screenshot posted on Google Blogoscoped so maybe they are just testing the new layouts.
