Using GNU/Linux? Here’s How to Quickly Save Files for the Windows OS

Alright, a small tip for GNU/Linux users. Maybe a few GNU/Linux users will find it useful who are running their machines in dual boot mode.

If you’re a newbie, running a GNU/Linux distro that didn’t come with NTFS-3G Read/Write driver, here’s how to quickly transfer files from Linux to Windows partition:

  1. Fire up the cute little fdisk utility.
  2. Create a small (e.g. 1 GB) FAT32 partition. (Linux can read/write on a FAT32 partition.) Give it a label (e.g. Shared Files).
  3. Add the new partition details in your /etc/fstab file. Save the file.
  4. Mount the newly created partition.
  5. Copy your files to the newly created FAT32 partition.
  6. Restart your PC, switch to Windows and voila! You can access the shared files.

MyBlogLog, Navaratri, etc.

Past and Future

1). Sorry to say that tomorrow, I’m going to spend hours leaving spammers’ communities over at MyBlogLog.

‘Sorry’ because I didn’t want to offend some people by leaving their communities. I’ve liked reading their blogs and learned a few things too but the problem is that if you’re not ready to understand my problem, why should I understand yours? You just don’t understand that there are gazillions of people who already have enough money to buy whatever they want to buy. They don’t need your free gifts worth $1000 or even $10,000.

I waited and waited and waited.. more than one, two or three months, to see what MyBlogLog does to control SPAM. Got nothing in return. Now I’ve really lost all the strength to digest “promotion” messages. I kept my words to not spam any of my MyBlogLog community members and I’m glad that many people who left comments in this old MyBlogLog thread did the same.

My community members can be dead sure that if Avinash has to promote his blog/websites, he’ll prefer investing money in programs like AdWords instead of pissing people off by sending self-promotional crap. Months ago, when I went against the MyBlogLog bulk-messaging feature, many MyBlogLog supporters wrote that the folks at MyBlogLog did good by introducing the bulk-messaging feature. It’ll force “spammers (the MBL members who joined over 300 communities)” leave many communities because a person can’t read so many blogs, can’t interact with 1000s of people, etc.

Who the hell are you to decide who can read how many blogs?! Anyway, let’s forget this ’cause it doesn’t matter anymore. I track over a thousand blog feeds so I’m a spammer. Funny thing is that I’m saying sorry before leaving your communities. I shouldn’t because you’ll be happy if a ’spammer’ leaves your MBL communities. So here we go… Tomorrow, I’ll leave all the communities who have sent promotional crap my way. I want to see my MyBlogLog profile clean. Now it doesn’t matter if I have to leave 75% or even 90% communities to keep my profile clean. If you’re a member of BlogCatalog, send me your community URL. I’ll be more than happy to join your community, i.e., if I’ve some spare time to kill.

2). Too many subscribers maybe wondering why am I not posting new posts. If you’re one of them, forgive me for ignoring you for more than 10 days. I’ve been busy building a beowulf cluster for one of my projects. Had to install and configure Slackware on 20+ workstations. It may take a few more days to make everything fully functional for the project. I’ve been slacking so much that I may start writing about Slackware on this blog.

I didn’t spend all these days installing and configuring Slackware though. My body, mind and soul was pretty bored of computers so I spent hours with nature in the past 7 or 8 days. A complete self-reboot! Now I’m feeling way better.

3). My “news river” project is stuck somewhere in the Internet tube!

4). I’ve a tiny surprise but I won’t mention a word about it. Reason? I always fail to finish my personal projects at time!

5). Happy Navaratri, my Indian readers!

6). Check out Soup.io, an amazing Tumblr alternative. I’ve been using it for one of my eLife streams and really like it. It imports links from my del.icio.us, StumbleUpon (both reviews and thumbed-up links), ma.gnolia, Pownce, Twitter and other social bookmarking accounts. Almost any feed works with Soup.io. You can also import your Tumblr blog posts.

Some Bloggers Displaying Visitor IP Addresses in Their Sidebars – WTF?

Face the truth: Running a blog, having a few hundred/thousand subscribers and getting a few thousand uniques/day doesn’t give you ANY right to ruin our privacy. Day by day, the “Show Your Visitor IP Addresses” trend seems to be going out of control. Bloggers are adding the “display visitor IP addresses” type plugins without caring about the visitor privacy.

If you use any plugin that reveals visitor IP addresses for the world to see and do any friggin thing with it, I kindly request that you remove such plugins pretty soon. If you ignore my request, I’ll create a list of all the bloggers who are using such plugins and request my readers to stop visiting such sites. I’ve also planned to start a campaign on this topic and I believe that when you start a campaign for a good cause, your friends certainly support you. Visitor Privacy is a serious topic and we bloggers will have to do something to stop ‘em who are ruining our privacy.

Once again, I request that if you care about your blog readers, please stop revealing their IP addresses.

p.s. I’ll highly appreciate it if these wonderful bloggers take some time out of their busy schedule to write on “Visitor Privacy”:

I’m sure that I haven’t added many people in the list but if you aren’t in this list, it doesn’t mean you aren’t awesome. (: There are a few hundred people who should be in this list but it’s just a start. I want to know what these bloggers have to say on “Visitor Privacy”. If you think that whatever I’ve written is wrong, feel free to ignore this post.

p.p.s. If you’ve already written any article on this topic, please let me know. (The comment form is open for this post. It’ll be automatically disabled after 30 days.)

Comments Disabled For Now

Hey guys! I want to let you know that I’ve disabled comments on this blog for maybe a few days/weeks/months/years.. because currently, I’ve no time to take care of the comments being left by both ‘good’ and ‘extra bad’ types. SPAM bots are getting aggressive but I’m a human. I’ve too many other things to do.

Related News: Some a$$h013$ have been trying to deface this blog for past couple of days and I’ve been watching. They’re doing good in a way because it seems like I’ve completely ditched my old profession (network security).

Please hold your horses while I do some security exercises. I appreciate your comments and will do my best to open the comment forms as soon as possible.
