The iPad, by Apple Inc., is easily one of the best-selling tablets in the world, having sold more than 121 million devices since its release in 2010. Alongside tablets from Google, Samsung, and ASUS, the iPad line is considered the best tablet available.

What Makes the iPad Competitive?

According to TechRadar, the fourth-generation iPad (iPad 4) is the best tablet on the market today because of its display, the application library, and the reliability of its operating system. CNET also rates the iPad 4 as the best in the market, though it focuses more on the device’s hardware. Is the iPad really the best tablet on the market and, if so, why?

Under the Hood

The iPad 4 possesses a 1.4Ghz, dual-core processor custom-made by Apple for the iPad 4 as well as a quad-core integrated graphics processor. Its 1 GB of RAM, 16-128 GB of flash storage, 1.2 MP front camera and 5 MP rear camera, and its 2,048 x 1,536 resolution display with 256 pixels-per-inch make this a solid tablet though at a steep $500-$800, depending on storage capacity.

ASUS Transformer Infinity

By comparison, the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T possesses a 1.6Ghz, quad-core processor with an integrated 12-core graphics processor, 1 GB of RAM, 32-64 GB of flash storage, and a 2 MP front camera and 8 MP rear camera, though it does suffer from a smaller display and lower pixel density. Additionally, the TF700T also performs better than the iPad 4, at a cost of $430 for the 32 GB of storage compared to the iPad 4’s $600 price tag for the same storage capacity.

Samsung Galaxy Note

Similarly, the Galaxy Note 10.1 by Samsung possesses a 1.4Ghz, quad-core processor with an additional quad-core GPU. The display is significantly inferior to the iPad 4 or TF700T, though it carries 2 GB of RAM and 1.9 MP front and 5 MP rear cameras. At $500 for 32 GB of storage, it is much less expensive than the iPad 4.

Google Nexus

With a slightly superior CPU, a significantly superior GPU, a substantially superior display, slightly superior cameras, twice as much RAM as the iPad 4, and at $500 compared to the iPad 4’s $600 price for the 32 GB model, Google’s Nexus 10 also seems to be superior to the iPad 4.

How does the iPad Beat its Competitors?

The iPad 4 is more expensive and comes to the table with less under the hood than its largest competitors, so why does the iPad sell so much more? The answer seems to be its application library. Android applications are not always listed in a central database. Additionally, Android is largely open-source whereas Apple is not. The openness of Android allows many vendors to design a variety of different devices with different hardware. This means that an application that is designed for one device may not work, or not work as well, on a different device with different hardware. While open-source is generally more secure and reliable than its closed-source counterparts, it seems that a centralized application database or application search engine – similar to Synaptic for the Debian OS – may positively affect the reception of the Android tablets.

    It is just the brand.. If you use an iPhone like me.. then you love the hardware and the software (IOS) .. and same apply to the iPad..

    It have a nice design and the usability is much more better then devices with android on it..
