History and naming

The name “Nokia” has been established in 1865 in Tampere  by Frederick Idestam. The company later on relocated in the city of Nokia. The city name comes from the river which flowed through the city. The name of the river “Nokianvirta” is based on the Finnish word meaning sable and pine marten later on.

Facts about Ringtones

If you ever wondered where the ringtone “Nokia Tune” is comming from, let me tell you that the sound is based on a guitar song called “Gran Vals”, composed and played by a Spanish musician Fransisco Tarrega. That title was so hard to remember that people simply called it “Nokia Tune”. The renaming took place back in 1998 by Nokia launching into the market. Free Themes are available today all over the internet. One of the biggest collections of Themes, Games and Ringtones is available for free download at FunNokia

AIKON or NOKIA backwards

Let me say that this a based on a geek thing 🙂 As I was developing on Symbian SDK I saw this a couple of times in various SDK application packages and namespaces. Even today you still hear users and developers calling Nokia ‘aikon’.

Great job with the pictures. The phone has not yet been realesed in India(Delhi) yet but its worth looking forward to. The E51 has definitely been appraised with specs & looks definitely. Its a good competition to the E90 as well especially for the segment of people who do not like carrying a bulky phone.

Nokia’s mobile phones got a big publicity boost in 1987, when Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was pictured using a Mobira Cityman to make a call from Helsinki to his communications minister in Moscow. This led to the phone’s nickname of the “Gorba”.
