Healthcare And Insurance App Design Trends

It’s a foregone conclusion that apps are here to stay. Those useful, fun little things have insinuated themselves into every aspect of our lives. Add the fact smart phones are getting more powerful and able to run increasingly complex apps, and you get a good idea that the whole app thing is really just getting started. But there’s a question as to how these apps will affect particular industries and services.

For instance, the fields of health care and health insurance are positively ripe with opportunities for the creation of new apps. Everyone needs health care at some point, and everyone should have health insurance to help pay for it. See a need and fill it with an app, right? With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the trends in health care and health insurance app design.

Healthcare And Insurance App Design Trends

Many health-care apps bring the medical professionals to the patient, no matter where that patient is

More Games

Who doesn’t enjoy games? But just like there are games out there that teach kids certain educational concepts, there are apps aimed at grown-ups (I was going to say “adult-oriented apps”, but that could imply types of activities deemed not safe for work) to help raise awareness of healthcare and health insurance issues. Since games are normally played over and over, the information sinks in by sheer weight of repetition.

Comparison Shopping

There are more apps out there that allow the consumer to do comparison shopping for insurance premiums and health plans. Everyone wants to save money and yet get the best coverage they can. Apps like this come in awfully handy when you want the information on-hand when attending something like a benefits fair, and you want to do some on-the-spot comparisons. The end result are more informed shoppers, and less buyers’ remorse. In fact, comparison apps could very well give people enough confidence to purchase a plan they would otherwise pass on.

The Diagnostic App in Greater Use

Patients dealing with chronic conditions are increasingly being tracked courtesy of smart phones. Assessments can be made on their conditions based on their level of activity, where they are located, etc. For patients with sleep issues, monitors can be added to a patient’s Apple Watch or Android Wear. Cardiac patients can have their blood pressure and heart rate monitored remotely, alerting the physician of a potential situation.

Apps like this represent a major boost to in-home care, since patients can be monitored remotely. Rather than being held for observation in a hospital room, the patient can be at home, doing their everyday activities, while still being watched.

More Company-Specific Apps

At least it seems that way. An increasing number of health insurance companies, like Aetna, for example, are providing their customers with apps in order to give them that mobile access that’s become quite an expected convenience these days. Patients can file claims and keep track of their status, making the bureaucracy a little easier to deal with.

Health Maintenance Apps

One way to avoid health problems or at least reduce their likelihood is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are numerous apps out there to help in this endeavor, with more appearing every day. There are apps that monitor your diet,or track your exercise habits. There’s even an app that can be used to alert friends and family when you are going on a run or a bike ride, and where you’ll be. Should you find yourself in a situation where you can’t communicate, there’s an app that will alert paramedics or EMTs of your medical conditions, allergies, medications, blood type, organ donor status, and emergency contacts.

As the article “5 Factors to Consider When Comparing Health Insurance Plans” notes, your health insurance has many aspects and facets. At this point in time, a good app is probably not one of them. But in the future, a good app may in fact be a big plus.

Born and raised in the Boston area, I was rocketed to New Hampshire, where under the Granite State's yellow sun and lack of income tax, I have gained the powers of super-sarcasm, brilliant creativity, and slightly disturbing sense of humor.
