File System Corruption While Performing System Restore in Windows 7

A File System defines a standard method for storing and organizing files on any storage media. It plays a key role in storage, organization, manipulation, and retrieval of this data by the computer’s operating system. It is also responsible for distributing clusters or blocks to various files and directories. Hence, any damage to the file system can make your operating system unstable and lead to critical scenarios of data loss. This corruption usually occurs because of hard restarts, software conflicts, and hardware failures. To salvage your important data in such circumstances, you should perform partition recovery using advanced third-party software.

Hard Disk Drive File System Restore

You may occasionally come across the following error message while trying to run System Restore in Windows 7:

Windows detected file system corruption on OS (C:). You must check disk for errors before it can be restored

When you check the drive for errors, you find no problems. This behavior is usually seen due to corruption of the underlying file system. This may also happen because of corruption of Windows system files.

Additionally, you may also see that the Disk Defragmenter fails to respond to the ‘Analyze’ or ‘Defragment’ buttons. This indicates that your hard disk contains corrupt files, folders, or bad sectors.

In order to fix file system corruption, you should run the System File Checker (SFC) scan. To do so, run the ‘SFC /SCANNOW’ command from the command prompt. You should also use the ‘Chkdsk’ utility to determine the status of your drive. This tool checks your hard drive for errors, bad sectors, and other similar problems. When used along with the ‘/F’ option, it automatically fixes several problems with the drive. To run ‘Chkdsk’ on your hard drive, follow these steps:

  • Go to ‘Start’ and select ‘Run’.
  • In the ‘Open’ box, type ‘cmd’ and hit ENTER.
  • Run the given command at the prompt:
    chkdsk c: /f

Now, you should run Disk Defragment from the command prompt to verify if it works fine.

In case you continue to receive the same error, then take help of commercial third-party partition recovery software. These tools efficiently scan the entire hard drive to recover data from all the lost or corrupt partitions. They easily recover lost, deleted, or formatted data from FAT and NTFS based volumes. With the help of these tools, you can perform recovery of more than 185 different file types. Further, they are compatible with Windows 7, Vista, Server 2003, XP, 2000, and NT4 (SP6).

Hi Kanisha, thats good to hear 🙂 Having an up-to-date backup is always a good idea. Often people do not care about backuping their files (and work) until the system crashes… Use an automated backup software system to be safe 🙂 I will write an article about affordable backup automation for consumers soon!

Sometimes in case of severe corruption it becomes very difficult to recover data from corrupted file system. I have faced the same situation with Windows 7 but very soon I sorted out the problem and recover windows 7 system files. The best thing is is that you can download the free demo version of this software and preview your recovery results.
