WordPress 2.2 RC1 Available For Download
by Avinash
According to Ryan Boren’s post, WordPress 2.2 RC1 has been made available for download. If you need support for the release candidate, the Testers List is the best place to go. But, it seems like they have dropped tagging feature:
We weren’t completely happy with the underlying design of the new tagging feature. Instead of shipping with something we weren’t entirely pleased with, we decided to remove tagging from 2.2. This is a big bummer since tagging was the biggest user-visible feature in 2.2. I think removing it was for the best, however, because the debate over the removal resulted in a new generic taxonomy design that is flexible and powerful and addresses all of the concerns with the old design. Plugins will be able to do some cool things with this new framework.
What’s so cool about WordPress 2.2 anyway?
>> New User Features
- Improved comment editing
- Widgets (no longer a plugin but available under Presentation tab)
- Deactivate Plugins automatically (activate automatically not in yet)
- New Blogger Import
>> Developer / Power User Stuff
- Atom 1.0 support for feeds.
- Multiple format comment feeds, including Atom.
- Switched to jQuery for core JS, which is lighter and faster.
- Atom API support.
- Additional XML-RPC APIs for pages and such.
- phpmailer (http://phpmailer.sourceforge.net/) was integrated for performance and maintainability.
- Plugin sandbox http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3254
- Ability to set database character set and collation via wp-config.php
- Ability to set WordPress address (URL) and Blog address (URL) via wp-config.php
If these new features sound cool, you are always welcome to give WP 2.2 RC1 a try.
Happy Blogging!

I tested out 2.2 and haven’t noticed any significant hiccups. Most of the changes are under the hood.
